Whidbey Island Waldorf School fifth-grader Aurora Coffey received honorable mention for her story about Gertrude, the Chicken in Charge.
Aurora wrote the story for a recent writing competition held by Backyard Poultry Magazine.
The 10-year-old Aurora is a member of the Rock-n-Doodle 4-H poultry club and was inspired by her white-crested blue Polish hen, Victoria, who is a featured character in the story which the author titled “The Silkie Mystery.”
