The students were feted at a scholars recognition event April 15 at Coupeville Methodist Church.

Those honored from South Whidbey High School include Eva Denka for mathematics; Erica Johnson for science and Emma Monte Calvo in technology.

The young women were selected as the most outstanding female scholars in their respective fields by their high school’s academic staff.

Denka has been on the school’s honor roll and is an Honors Society member. She received an honorable mention in the Whidbey Island Writers Association contest in 2007. Her other interests include soccer, piano, volunteering as a Sunday school teacher and working at Useless Bay Animal Clinic.

Denka plans on attending Washington State University, majoring in zoology or animal sciences with the goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Johnson, a student who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average her entire high school career, has been student body vice president and class of 2008 public relations officer. She participates in both Key Club and Soroptimist Club.

Johnson is a varsity cross country runner and has been a member of four league champion teams, and has participated in four state cross country meets. Her other interests include photography, drawing and teaching Sunday School.

She received the student award from her principal for her 2007 end-of-year movie.

Calvo’s other interests include track, cross country and band.

Her plans are to finish her two-year degree at a community college, then transfer to a four-year school with a focus on film.

Other Whidbey Island girls recognized were Coupeville High School scholars Jodi Clark, Elizabeth Hertlein and Rosa Felici and Oak Harbor High School students Brynn Fakkema, Nicole Bouchard and Anna Victoria Olavario.

The branch presented each scholar with a certificate of excellence, a check and flowers.

The high school scholars recognition project is partially funded by the organization’s annual event, “Showcase of the Arts,” a high school art show that will be held this year from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Greenbank Farm.
