To the editor:
Listening to a motorist next to me honk at the motorist in front of her reminded me of the purpose “honking” serves in our family.
For at least 56 years that Nancy and I can recall, we have never left the house without honking. Three short taps on the horn, as we leave each other, is short-hand for “I – love – you.”
When our children were old enough to drive, three short honks were a well- established practice, whenever they left the house. And we were pleased to hear our neighbors saying “goodbye” in the same endearing way. Now our grandchildren are honking their farewells.
Just thought I’d share another, more loving, reason to honk. For us, it’s a reminder that we love and we are loved. Hearing the neighbor honk is yet another reminder that love surrounds us.
