Mary Moore Mullin Mowery

Mary Moore Mullin Mowery, 81, of Freeland, passed away on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, from leukemia after two bonus years she shared with family and friends.

Mrs. Mowery was born on Oct. 29, 1934, in Bluefield, W.Va., to John and Rose McDonald Mullin. She was raised and graduated from high school in Bluefield. She attended the University of Richmond — Westhampton College where she met Al. On Sept. 2, 1955 she married Alfred Mowery. During their marriage, they lived in a number of places including Potomac, Md. and her favorite being Las Vegas, Nev. Mary moved to Whidbey Island in 2012 to live near her daughter, Cindy.

Mary was a proud Daughters of American Revolution member. She loved keeping up with friends and tap dancing in shows with her Las Vegas Ya Ya sisters. She had many pets throughout her life and her special dog, Rosie, was always by her side.

She was a member of St. Augustine’s-in the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland, Wash.

Mary is survived by her brother, John R. Mullin (Trudy) in Georgia; her son, Alfred Leighton Mowery (Elizabeth) of Houston, Texas; her daughter, Cynthia Philistine (Thomas) of Greenbank; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Cooper (Dale) in Virginia; and her four grandchildren: Jeffrey, Kristen, Melissa and Kyle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, in August, 2004 and by her son, Mark in May, 2006.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, 10 a.m., at St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church, with Rev. Nigel Taber-Hamilton officiating. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories and condolences at www.whidbeymemorial.com.
