“Though they scored more points than they have in any other game this year, the South Whidbey High School boys basketball players could not make up for a 33-point second-quarter Lakewood drubbing Tuesday night as they lost their 11th straight game this season.Playing at home in Erikson Gymnasium, the Falcons never overcame the 17-33 second period, in spite of a record book scoring performance by junior Tim Gabelein.Gabelein scored a game- and season-high 33 points and paced the Falcons to a 43-36 second half. But it wasn’t enough to make up the 18 point deficit the team took into halftime.Team coach Andy Davis said Lakewood came out with a hot-shooting offense paced by two players who scored 25 points or more. Thirteen first-half turnovers made things worse for the Falcons, who hit 45 percent of their shots compared to Lakewood’s 66 percent. The Falcons got within five points of Lakewood midway through the fourth quarter, but were forced to foul to stay close. Lakewood’s shooters made 14 of 21 freethrows to put the game away. The Falcons play on the road today against Lynden Christian. “
