Board, 4-period day panel will present options

For the first time since the South Whidbey School Board and school district officials started thinking about changing the four-period day at the high school, the board and a four-period day committee will give the public some options.

The committee, which has been developing options from a survey conducted by Portland’s Northwest Regional Educational Laboratories, will present the results to the the board Monday night in a 7 p.m workshop at South Whidbey Intermediate School. The board and committee members will narrow the choices to three options within a four-period schedule.

“We will be looking at what is helpful in our existing schedule and what we can do to improve it to benefit more students,” said Dr. Martin Laster, superintendent of the the district.

Laster said the board is expected to adopt one of the proposed schedule options at its regular meeting on Feb. 25 for implementation next fall.

The 16-member committee, which was formed last fall, is comprised of the high school principal, vice principal, superintendent, assistant superintendent, four teachers, two students, five parents and the vocational director for the district.

The public will have its first official opportunity to comment on the new four-period day scheduling options on Feb. 11. However, Monday’s workshop is also open to the public. The board has not yet determined a time or a venue for the Feb. 11 hearing.

The adoption of a schedule at the Feb. 25 meeting will be at the board’s regular meeting site in the community room at the intermediate school. That meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
