Greenbank Farm hits jackpot

The Greenbank Farm Management Group has received an anonymous challenge grant of $15,000.

The farm is owned by the Port of Coupeville and managed by the nonprofit group.

The management group is hoping donors will help double the grant in an effort to meet the numerous expenses of keeping and maintaining the farm’s many attractions available to everyone, and are targeting Dec. 1 to raise the $30,000 goal.

Among the missions of the management group are to act as a steward for preservation of the farm and protect its open spaces, scenic beauty and environmentally sensitive wetlands.

Whidbey Island Farm Tour set

The Whidbey Island Farm Tour offers people a chance to experience the island’s rural character first hand. Eighteen farms are open to the public on Saturday, Oct. 4, and Sunday, Oct. 5.

The tour is free, and visitors can start anywhere and take in as many farms as they like.

This year, in addition to goods and produce available at the farm sites, the Farm to Home Fair on Saturday at the Greenbank Farm will offer merchandise, information and activities. Visitors can sit in on a demonstration of cooking with locally-grown food, learn how to make goat cheese, shop for locally-made cosmetics, see island crafts people weave local fibers into beautiful clothes, or watch bees as they make honey.

Seventeen Whidbey Island restaurants support the tour by featuring locally-grown foods on their menus for both days. And at the Deer Lagoon Grange, people can enjoy a country and western dance the night of Saturday, Oct. 4.
