South Whidbey High School cross country senior JD Peters hopes to represent America by competing in China during the winter break as a member of the USA Track & Field Association.
“We’ve studied China’s history and learned about the people and this is my chance to see the places I’ve read about,” Peters said.
“This is something I’m very much committed to; Canada’s the only foreign country I’ve ever visited.”
In addition to a 5-kilometer New Year’s Day run, team members will tour Hong Kong (Victoria Peak and Aberdeen floating village) and Zhaoqing (a porcelain factory, Sun Yat Sen’s home and a local market) plus visit the Jockey Ti-I high school.
Sponsored by the non-profit Washington Cultural Exchange, the experience develops leadership skills and organization, instills a desire to study and learn about other cultures, creates lifelong friendships and increases better understanding of history and geography, according to organizing Coach Neil Hanson.
“The best ambassadors for America are these kids,” Hanson said.
WCE was organized in 1986 as an educational program to increase cultural awareness through international competition.
There’s one big hurdle to clear before the trip, however. The Peters’ family needs to raise $1,000 by Nov. 1 and the balance of $1,400 by Dec. 1.
“This is a rare opportunity for JD and I’m determined to raise the money so he can go,” said Cindi Peters, the runner’s mother.
