“Five South Whidbey girls will get the chance to write their own tickets to the state tennis meet Friday when they take their winning ways to the 2A district meet.Singles player Jenny Newman and the doubles teams of Paige Jolley and Kaitlin King and Jenny Saephan and Kylie Bozym tore their way through the sub-district meet in Blaine last Thursday to earn matches at the Federal Way district tournament Friday. It was in doubles that the Falcons showed their dominance. Both South Whidbey pairings breezed through first and second round matches against Lakewood and Blaine teams before facing off against one another in the championship match. Saephan and Bozym won the match handily 6-1, 6-2, but neither team could feel bad because both move on to district play.In singles, Newman had the best day even though she has played fewer varsity matches than almost any singles player on the South Whidbey roster. After a first-round bye, Newman downed a Lakewood player 7-6, 6-4, then lost her third-round match 3-6, 6-4, 3-6. But it was enough to give her second place and a ticket to the district meet. The Falcons’ Number 1 singles player, Molly Fox, took a rougher road. She won her opening match 6-0, 6-1 against Blaine’s Number 2 as well as a third-round match against Blaine’s Number 1 with scores sof 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. But she could not beat either of Lakewood’s singles players. Fox placed fourth in sub-district play and will not advance to the district meet.Falcon coach Tom Kramer said his team played their best tennis of the year at the sub-district meet. He said he hopes the girls’ inspired play will continue when they take the court Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Federal Way’s Pac West Tennis Club to start the district meet. “
