Dig out on your craziest Hawaiian shirt, figure out how to make a lei and don’t forget your uke this Saturday.

Head on down to “the beach” at Seawall Park from 1-3 p.m. and experience a luau, Langley style.

Besides live music and a barbecue, there will be prizes for the wildest and best vintage Hawaiian shirts and for the best homemade lei.

Burgers (regular and veggie) and hot dogs will be available for a donation, prepared by Bruce Grimm of Bubba Grimm’s BBQ.

The Seawall Park Luau is sponsored by City of Langley Arts Commission and Seawall Park Committee of Parks and Open Spaces. It’s aimed at informing the public about proposed improvements to the tiny strip of a park on Langley’s waterfront below First Street.

Drawings of the proposed artistic shelters and other ideas by designer Jay Davenny will be displayed.

“Attendees will have an opportunity to meet Jay and discuss his designs,” said organizer Don Wodjenski. “Families can picnic, enjoying the park setting and the beach. Good weather is predicted and the tide is low.”

The Cukes from Central Whidbey and Whidbey Ukulele Kanikapila from South Whidbey will be playing ukulele music; hula dancers may even make an appearance.

Seawall Park improvement plans must still be approved by the Langley City Council.

A subcommittee of Langley Arts Commission, called the Langley Public Arts Consortium, plans to raise funds to cover construction costs.

Seawall Park Luau is open to the public and organizers encourage community members to bring their kids.

Wacky trophies, made by Laurie Davenport and Claudia Fuller from Casey’s Crafts, will be awarded for the following categories: Best “Wildest” Hawaiian Shirt (men’s or women’s); Best Vintage Hawaiian Shirt (men’s or women’s); Best Homemade Lei from natural materials; Best Homemade Lei from mixed materials.
