Valentine’s possibilities

Lovers, rejoice. The island offers a myriad of activities in celebration of Valentine’s Day, some extending beyond Feb. 14.

Country Cottages of Langley allows for a romantic weekend and a box of chocolates is included in the stay for those who book with the secret code “Heart.”

For gift purchases before or during the special day, consider Sweet Mona’s to meet all chocolate cravings. Flying Bear Farm also provides innovative floral arrangements.

A handful of restaurants in Langley are preparing to serve specials. The Braeburn is doing a themed dinner, with special entrees including petit sirloin topped with shrimp scampi and linguini pescatore with scallops, shrimp and crab. For dessert, a bittersweet chocolate espresso mousse.

Support young local musicians by attending the Sweetheart Dance at Trinity Lutheran Church, where the South Whidbey Jazz Band will be performing.

For the “cheap date,” look no further than The Clyde, a movie theater where the tickets are inexpensive and soda and popcorn still only cost a dollar. The film “Knives Out” will be playing on Feb. 14.

On the South End, there are plenty of opportunities to drink red wine and eat chocolate, with a self-guided tour on Feb. 15 and 16.

Two distilleries and four wineries, from Greenbank to Freeland to Langley, will be offering wine, spirits and sweet treats. For those who can only make it for one day during the weekend, a local’s tip advises to choose Sunday, the less busier of the two.

On the North End, there are just as many events to choose from.

Currents Bistro in Coupeville has a specialized Valentine’s Day menu for $50 per person. Menu items include dijon and pistachio crusted rack of lamb, stuffed boneless half chicken or honey, garlic and miso glazed sockeye salmon. Dessert is a surprise.

The Greenhouse Florist & Nursery in Oak Harbor has several fanciful bouquets that can be bought, including one made of candy.

A themed dance and auction, the Mariners and Mermaids Gala will take place that evening at the Coupeville Rec Hall. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in costume. All proceeds support the Coupeville Maritime Heritage Foundation and the schooner Suva. The Wind and Rain Band will be performing.

People can take their sweeties skating at the Roller Barn in Oak Harbor, which has Open Skate Fridays for $5 per person.

The Blue Fox Drive-in Theater has a Valentine’s Day package for two, including two new movies, a heart-shaped pizza, a bucket of popcorn, two large drinks and a candy to share, all for $40.
