To the editor:

I was pleased to see so much interest in the Langley City Council races this election with three candidates vying for each position. And so it was with interest that I read The Record’s recent article detailing the close races, with quotes from several of the candidates.

Regarding Position 4, I did not know any of the candidates. However, any candidate that exhibits the ageist attitude that Bruce Allen exhibited in his reaction to Thomas Gill’s primary victory is a candidate I probably will not vote for.

“Last guy I’d think would be in first,” “Just a young kid,” “I don’t know much about him,” “in his 30s or something,” and then the disarming “but, well good for him” as if Thomas was unqualified simply because of his relative youth.

What I know about Thomas is what I read on his website, and his responses to the Record’s survey of each candidate. And the same is true of Bruce Allen.

Turns out that I agree with much of what each man says — and I disagree with some of what each says. That is certainly not unexpected. I will do what I usually do to decide who to vote for: I will read their policy positions, listen to their comments at forums, reach out to trusted friends for their opinions and then consider who I think will best serve our city.

However, given Allen’s ageist attitude toward Gill, I wonder which man would be willing to listen to all of the citizens of Langley, regardless of their age? I think I’ve got a pretty good idea.
