Letter: HOA rules violate free speech rights

Editor,

A little over four years ago, I bought a home in the Cherry Hills Retirement Community. Since then, I have learned there are no First Amendment rights for homeowners in Washington state HOA communities.

Yes, I pay the mortgage, the property taxes and all other state taxes, but I am not allowed to fly any flag from my home other than the national and state flags. I am not even allowed to post one campaign sign on my front yard for a candidate for local office. This is not my idea of America. It is definitely not an area where I want to live.

Editor’s note: Under state law, homeowners associations may not prevent residents from posting political signs.
