In your Wednesday March 24 edition, there was a letter to the editor by Lorinda K F Newton, of Clinton that asserted, “House Resolution 1, the so-called ‘For the People Act,’ violates the U.S. Constitution by allowing the federal government to usurp the states’ rights to oversee elections.”
Ms. Newton is wrong. There’s no violation of the Constitution.
Article 1, Section 4, Clause 1 of our Constitution specifically states: “The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of choosing Senators.”
Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such regulations.
The proposed law protects voting rights for all of us, and should be passed as quickly as possible.
