Letter: Second Amendment not meant to be used against federal gov’t

Editor,

Nancy Mayer’s recent letter was indeed food for thought. My own thoughts on this thorny issue are as follows —- it’s obvious that what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they penned the Second Amendment (if I may be so bold as to second-guess them) is that allowing citizens to carry weapons was for protection against predatory Indian attacks and in the event of a foreign invasion, which was a real possibility back in those tempestuous days.

I think it’s a real stretch to contend that what they really meant was that should the government encroach upon citizens’ rights, a “well-regulated militia” would be ready, willing and able to defend themselves should such an unlikely event occur.
