Editor,

At a recent forum, Island County treasurer candidate Wanda Grone indicated that, were she required to make budget cuts, the “position” she would eliminate would be that of the foreclosure deputy.

To paraphrase, as the numbers of property subject to tax foreclosure have dropped, those duties could easily be absorbed by the other staff members.

For the record, while numbers are lower than the last few years, they are still six times what they were five years ago. Also, that “position” would be me.

I find it curious that the duties she finds least important are those performed by the one person that has publicly expressed their support for the incumbent treasurer, Ana Maria Nunez.

Apparently, while Grone bemoans the fact that she was “fired for filing to run,” without mentioning the ongoing issues regarding her performance, she feels that others should not be allowed to express their opinions without repercussion. Things that make you go “hmmm.”

I would like to share the following: while candidate Grone stated that this position would be cut as a way to save budget dollars, this is the one position in the treasurer’s office that is deemed so important by the state Legislature that it is mandated and funded without budget constraints and from separate budget dollars. There would be no savings. Cut the position, lose the funds.

Second, this is arguably the least pleasant job in the county.

That being said, with the complete support and encouragement of the current treasurer, I have been able to negotiate with local service organizations to assist taxpayers, and secure grant monies that allow those that meet program requirements to save their homes. Dozens of families remain in their homes today because of the assistance provided.

I have been allowed to help procure pro-bono legal assistance. I have been allowed to assist with connecting taxpayers to medical treatment that has enabled them to qualify for exemption and deferral programs and has kept them in their homes.

I am sure that those people are grateful that Wanda was not the treasurer, as with the lack of importance she places on this position, they would be homeless.

Net savings to treasurer’s current expense budget – zero. Net benefit to Island County residents – priceless.

Please let Wanda know your opinion with your vote.
