LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Don’t forget about the under 6 crowd

Editor, I was sad to read about the impending teacher cuts due to decreased enrollment. We are fairly new residents to South Whidbey and feel fortunate to live here as we build our dream on a family farmstead. I’m writing in as I’ve noticed a fairly persistent narrative/concern about an aging island population and a shrinking youth demographic as it relates to planning. The 2010 census is often referenced as a basis for demographic projections and trend-lines.

Editor,

I was sad to read about the impending teacher cuts due to decreased enrollment.

As a family with a two-year-old and another baby on the way, I hope that policy-makers are paying attention to the growing number of young families like ours that are moving to the island.

We meet new young couples and families frequently, most have been on the island less than three years. I know this does not address the current district woes and dip in enrollment. But, judging from the full enrollment at nurseries and day-care facilities like the Childrens Center, the under 6 demographic is on the rise around here.

I hope that elected officials, district leaders and planners are not overlooking this as they make projections and plans for the future of this special place.
