Editor,

I have been reading about Island County Commissioner Kelly Emerson in the South Whidbey Record for what seems like a very long time. It is clear that she is not representing the majority of voters in Island County but instead has her own agenda.

It became clear first when the issue of prayer at the meetings came up. Even though the Constitution expressly forbids a state from recognizing a particular religion she still wants to have prayer at the beginning of the meetings of the commissioners.

Having any prayer sanctioned by the government implies that the state is recognizing the prayer’s religion.

Kelly Emerson still wants to figure out a way to have a government sanctioned prayer — but only a Christian prayer.

This shows that she does not respect the constitutions of either Washington state or the United States.

As if this weren’t enough, now she has misconstrued about what went on during a meeting in which the commissioners decided that only one commissioner would be present at each law and justice community meeting to avoid a quorum.

This meeting was recorded and it was plain what the intent was. Nevertheless, Kelly Emerson said that she understood it differently, which is just plain hogwash.

She then went to a meeting another commissioner was to attend, forcing the other commissioner to back out in order to avoid having a quorum and all the legal issues involved with that.

It is obvious that Kelly Emerson has no respect for the democratic process or for the separation of church and state. She has her own agenda and is apparently trying to use her position to further it.

This is undemocratic and unAmerican.
