LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Fair flea is a great idea

To the editor:

The new flea market at the fairgrounds Sunday, April 19, was great!

I was one of 15-plus vendors and made over $200 selling garage-sale items and some early artwork, and I bartered with other vendors and got some terrific items, too. What a great way to make some extra money and/or trade goods in these troubled times. Reminded me of the old swap meets in the ’60s and ’70s.

Over 20 vendors who signed up didn’t show up. They don’t know what they missed. The whole event was so well-attended and well-organized with great advertising, a terrific Web site (www.thefairflea.com) that has all the information, high visibility and good signage — well worth the $30 participation fee. There’re indoor booths available, or you can just sell out of your car like the car-boot sales in England, or set up your own booth outside.

And, unlike other weekend fairs in the area, you don’t have to be a vendor every week; you can just participate whenever you want to.

Kudos to the organizers! I’m pulling more stuff out of my garage today to sell next time, along with other artwork. Wait until the tourists hit the island! This is an idea whose time has come!
