To the editor:
This is in response to the Leif Haugen letter (SWR, Dec. 6).
Leif Haugen, I couldn’t agree more. This price-of-gas disparity has been plaguing me for quite some time.
Your observations actually compelled me do the math, conservatively I might add. Let’s take
15 gallons of gas per car on average to examine this disparity a little deeper. I’ll even present the argument conservatively by attaching $1.95 per gallon for the Mukilteo/Oak Harbor price and $2.30 per gallon for the South Whidbey price. Let’s say 100 cars per day in a 30 day time frame for a total of 45,000 gallons of gas. First the Mukilteo/Oak Harbor gross; 45,000 x $1.95 = $87,750. Now South Whidbey; 45,000 x $2.35 = $105,750 for an $18,000 difference per month.
I’m not sure, but is a round-trip ferry ticket for a gas-truck driver in the area of $18,000? In short, I will no longer be purchasing my gas here.
