I cannot thank enough the many friends, former students — some who have never voted before — and strangers for their trust and support. I am very humbled by their words and deeds to help get me elected.

The experience of running a positive campaign was fun although tiring at times. I met the most amazing people who allowed me to tell my story and felt I was a good choice for the job.

There were some folks that for whatever reason, did not want me as a board member. I want to extend my hand especially to them, to help make this a destination school district. We are in this together. We want people to come here because families are welcome and their kids will be well educated to have happy and successful lives. We want to help our local companies develop a local work force so that there are sustainable jobs that will keep our kids here and attract new families.

The superintendent reminded me that I must wear two hats: one as a board member and one as a volunteer. I agree they should be separate. I am not about changing the board or whole school system. I want to enhance the good works that we already have. Being part of the decision making team that supports the teachers with resources and proper training so they can help kids be successful is of significant importance to me. We are responsible for the fiduciary soundness that keeps the buses rolling, buildings maintained, grounds manicured and kids fed with healthy food.

It is important to change things if needed to make them better. I believe it is important to listen to the public for concerns and new ideas. You are our supporters. We must have our kids as our focal point and not just numbers, scores and money. When we — education as a whole — change that mentality I believe we will see greater improvements in scores and on-time graduation.

As a volunteer, on the other hand, I will be in the community as I always have, working to bring together businesses and organizations with kids.

I may be calling on you someday to help.
