LETTER TO THE EDITOR: LMS students are an inspiration

To the editor:

May I introduce you to a very wonderful group of Langley Middle school students – a few known as “Sea Biscuit Jockeys.” These students are polite, friendly, thoughtful and very courteous. For almost two years some have been working very hard in school to win the “Sea Biscuit” races. Others have won this lap of the race and are on to the next challenge. Most are giving their all to succeed!

These terrific students even helped Rudy celebrate his 90th birthday by writing individual cards, posting notice of his special day on the reader board and then making him a birthday cake.

Little did we know that a week later Rudy would be in the hospital with pneumonia. The jockeys came on in the race to send Rudy “Get Well” wishes. Sea Biscuits are our winners every time!

Thanks to our kids, Mr. Merrill, Janet Hunter and Mrs. Gilbert, especially. For allowing us, the volunteers, to participate in the Sea Biscuit Derby. We love it.

Thanks also to Kiwanis who care so much for the students on South Whidbey; scholarships, student clubs, special equipment needs, books, tutoring, mentoring, and the belief and support of kids!

Dolores and Rudy Mayko
