Sometimes in the midst of hectic schedules or despair, we forget to look around us, but we are privileged to live in an imperfect place where:

— Beauty is a benchmark for other places.

— A foresighted community preserves land for future generations, not the highest bidder.

— Public transportation is, unbelievably, non-fare-based.

— Though we complain, the temperatures are moderate.

— People aren’t afraid to smile at a stranger and even say, “Hi.”

— Numerous organizations, with their volunteers and supporters, help those in need. Santa Claus treats adults and children with a visit on a fire truck.

— At a post office, you are more than a street number, and a candy treat awaits.

— An enjoyable ferry ride to visitors becomes a way of getting to the “other” side.

— Peoples’ stories are as different as the marvelous sunsets.

— The canaries in the mine of our island, thrive.

— A community is concerned over a beloved lost pet.

— Island ‘time’ can be both a joy and a frustration.

— Neighborhood July Fourth parades are attended by innumerable people.

— A 40-plus degree, sunny December day is considered balmy.
