LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Our ferries, our livelihood

To the editor:

My friends, here are my thoughts and proposals for the use of the ferries that serve Whidbey Island.

It is my understanding that the overwhelming majority of island residents feel we have been disregarded, abused or sold out by our elected officials, the Department of Transportation and Washington State Ferries. If I am wrong, I will apologize.

This is how I view the ferry mess on Whidbey Island.

1. We pay enough to fund both the Clinton and the Keystone runs.

2. The money we spend for ferry travel is mismanaged.

3. The service that is provided is inadequate.

4. We have been promised, and money was approved, to add new ferries for Whidbey.

5. Dock improvements on both runs were to be completed years ago.

6. The chair of the Transportation Committee is our senator.

7. If the state can’t or won’t provide good service, we can.

8. Pass legislation to give Island County four ferries and we will run them.

9. Yes, I’m serious; Island County should run our ferries.

10. Yes, our ferries can pay for themselves with proper management.

Here are some questions for the ferry system and our elected officials.

What is the current revenue from our Whidbey Island ferry routes?

What is the current cost of operation of our ferries?

What type of legislation is needed to transfer the ferries to Island County?

How quickly could legislation be passed?

Will our elected officials support Island County-owned ferries?

What can be done NOW to stop the state from exploiting us citizens?

What is your commitment today to us citizens?

Conclusion: You are our elected officials. Tell us how to make our ferries ours.
