LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Reasonable Funicular design needs support

Editor,

The Langley funicular would make a fine investment to the economic development of Langley. I believe a viable, vibrant Langley is an asset and a source of pride to all South Whidbey residents. The funicular would be a charming and amusing — come on, you know you all want to ride on it — practical addition to the attractions that Langley presents to the locals and visitors alike.

I personally have observed literally thousands of visitors arrive by boat at the harbor, and for the most part they have come to visit Langley. For many, the need to walk up and back on the steep Wharf Street hill is a significant burden. Many wish to return to their boats with goods (some heavy) purchased in Langley. The funicular would provide an option for those folks — and it would be fun.

The Langley funicular would also provide visitors that arrive by car a new option for visiting the harbor and the new pedestrian-friendly breakwater that would not require finding a difficult parking spot or a steep stroll up Wharf — and it would be fun.

During the busy summer months, the parking at the harbor can be very challenging. The funicular could also provide the option of off-site parking for many where a visitor could park above the harbor and ride the lift down and back.

A reasonable design that would fit financially into the available funding as well as can be easily maintained and operated would certainly enhance the Langley experience.
