LETTER TO THE EDITOR | Washington can pay its own way

To the editor:

A proud Washington state.

The state of Washington is a rich and well- diversified state with a skilled work force and highly educated professionals.

How undignified can it be to see our governor, Christine Gregoire, travel to Washington, D.C. to beg for money when the state is empowered to tax itself?

All we need to do, for all to share the tax burden, is to put sales tax on food and gasoline.

We will then have enough money to keep our schools open, our public servants employed and our services open.

There would be roads to drive on and affordable, modern state ferries.

There would be enough resources to feed the poor and keep crime down and the economy up.

A proud state, like Washington, does not need welfare from the federal government.

The state of Washington is a responsible grown-up that can and will pay its own way.
