Letter: Two news articles an intresting juxtaposition

Editor,

I read with interest the March 24 article about the petition opposing the proposed homeless shelter near Coupeville.

At first, the petition’s arguments seemed to make sense — lack of services, concerns about safety — but as the article continued, the petitioners made clear that no Whidbey Island shelter would be acceptable.

Perhaps they would have homeless people rounded up and shipped to the mainland where we know there aren’t shelters enough.

Later, the article made clear that, in fact, Coupeville has more necessary services than anyplace else on Whidbey Island, and safety precautions have clearly been taken.

What a contrast with the article on the same page about plans to develop affordable housing in the Bayview area.

Here’s a plan which can support working people and may eventually help spur healthy economic development on Whidbey.

In time, this project may — may — even help reduce homelessness.

Thanks for the juxtaposition. After reading about yet another reactionary petition, it’s good to be reminded that there are forward-looking leaders on Whidbey.
