To the editor:

I should not have been surprised at the headline: “WICA seeks full liquor license,” in the Feb. 27 South Whidbey Record.

Then in that same edition there was a letter to the editor from the school board thanking everyone for voting and passing the school levies and how much the board and district appreciates the community support.

Before the board decides on this, why don’t they get a vote from all the people who “supported the school levies” and get their opinion of hard liquor being allowed on school property. Any alcohol on school grounds should not be acceptable for our school district. There are enough places to get a “drink” if you have to have one before any show that WICA does or places still open after the shows are done to have a “drink.”

Is the school district going to be held responsible if a “buzzed” or “drunk” driver causes an accident after attending a performance at WICA that was on school property and allowed by the district?

If WICA has to have alcohol, then maybe they should look for another building “off school property.” The community supported WICA performances before there was alcohol and I am sure that they will continue to support WICA without alcohol.

Wake up South Whidbey! If this alcohol issue is passed, it will only be the beginning of God knows what. Let the school board hear loud and clear that this is “not acceptable, period.”

Are all the signs on our school properties that read “drug free, alcohol free zone” apparently just for decoration? If it is not allowed then it should not be allowed in any way, shape or form. What’s next, a request for a liquor license so the high school can open a liquor store on that property? Stop it before it even gets started.

Superintendent Jo Moccia and the school board, if what you stated in your opinion letter that because these levies were passed you can now provide a “safe place” for our children, then mean what you say and deny this license.
