To the editor:
It was with great delight that I noted the headline “Skylarks capture the imagination with their happy music” for Frances Wood’s column.
When I opened Skylark Writing Studio, I knew the skylark was the perfect icon for writers — an ordinary bird that sings an extraordinary song.
Some of my writing students and I also love the sweet and mournful jazz tune, “Skylark” (Have you anything to say to me?) and drop everything when it comes on the radio. Sometimes a writer just has to slow dance.
I didn’t know skylarks had ever sung in the Pacific Northwest, but thanks to Frances Wood, I do now. How I’d love to hear one some early morning on Whidbey!
My research, by the way, told me that only the male skylarks sing. And that, my friends, is where the analogy to writers stops.
