This is a time for action, not defeat

Editor,

Regarding the editor’s column on November 16, 2016:

Justin, I will never accept Trump. You say you are a conservative, which I already knew. Then you lament the election and the people it will affect. It was clear from the start of the campaign and it affects every good proposal for a better environment and life in this country. I don’t know how you voted or if you voted, but you sound defeated. Acceptance is not something anyone should consider. It is time to educate. It is time to organize and fight back.

When you wrote your editorial about our local elections all I could think was this man is wishy-washy, endorsing the status quo conservatives like Barbra Bailey, who is a candidate backed by corporate money, instead of a grass roots candidate like Angie Homola, who is working for people. People like you and the ones you now lament will be targets of the new administration. The wonderful cartoon in today’s paper says it all and I turn to that page first when I get the paper.

The efforts toward mitigating climate disruption our clean energy programs, good jobs and much more will be affected. We can blame both parties for globalization, money in politics and see that they represent the elite. We should blame ourselves too for not being more civic minded. But not “progressives” like Bernie Sanders and millions of Americans who are working for a progressive agenda. It is time to work for a better future that is inclusive toward the real values that matter to all people. You are right that we will all be thinking about surveillance and the secret police but this is a time for action.

Editor’s note: Angie Homola received our endorsement for state senator, not Barbara Bailey. And for the record, Burnett belongs to the Justinican Party, a moderate offshoot of the Jedi Order.
