Pheifer is guest artist this month
Janet Pheifer is the guest artist at Studio 106 in Langley through November.
Pheifer’s artworks are collages of found objects and throwaway items which are re-imagined and contrasted with handmade paper, spun fibre, wood and wire.
The genesis for these works usually begins with one item — a rusty piece of metal, or leftovers from a job; maybe a warped piece of handmade paper. The works evolve with the addition of other materials which are chosen for their color and texture. The frames are made from scrap wood and hand spray painted.
The artist is a professional carpenter of 27 years and has had a lifelong interest in art. Skills learned both on the job and personally have been adapted to the creative process.

Raven Rocks Gallery presents “Through the Looking Glass”
The latest works of inventive photographer Joe Menth and the vibrant, contemporary mosaics of Sandy and Carl Bryant will be on display at Raven Rocks Gallery through Dec. 1.
Menth is a highly respected graphic artist, photographer, printer and mixed-media artist whose “looking glasses” are the lenses of his cameras. Joe will be offering hand crafted prints of his photographic images mounted on three-dimensional wooden frames. Subjects will include “Timescapes from the Water’s Edge,” “Magic Forests and Bays” panoramas and the “Satellites of Planet Whidbey.”
His work ranges from inspiringly beautiful simplicity to glimpses of the larger universe around us. This is the first showing of his new works in the gallery, and an experience not to be missed.
Sandy and Carl Bryant, artist/owners of Showcase Mosaics, are some of the gallery’s most collected artists. Their “looking glass” is a rich new series of mosaic wall art created especially for this show, to be joined by beautiful larger works not shown in the gallery previously. Working in this vibrant and timeless art form they use high quality glass, ceramic tile, semiprecious stones and other fine materials to create beautiful contemporary mosaic art. The Bryants have a long history of commissions for architectural, fine art, home decor and public mosaic artworks.

‘Art Under a Hundred’ offers affordable art
Whidbey Art Gallery on Second St. in Langley will open its first annual “Art Under a Hundred,” a show of pieces priced less than $100 at the Saturday, Nov. 5 Artwalk in Langley.
A special section of the gallery will be set aside for art priced at less than $100, including paintings, photography, encaustics, and a range of three-dimensional creations.
Also in the gallery, “Art Under the Tree” will coincide with the Nov. 18 Lighting of Langley. The gallery’s 26 artists will adorn a miniature Christmas tree with a variety of small art suitable for holiday gifts. The tree decorations will complement the gallery’s other holiday art display.

MUSEO gallery presents ‘Gathered’
Langley’s MUSEO gallery will show “Gathered,” a collection of work by nationally known fiber artists featuring a variety of materials, techniques and applications.
Some of the pieces are sculptural works, in both traditional and non-traditional materials. Others are vessel forms, sometimes with writing or other mixed media applications, using feathers or wire, paint, paper, pine needles, reed, stones, shells. In all of them, ideas, design and self-expression transcend function.

Brackenwood Gallery offers ‘Small Pleasures’
Brackenwood Gallery in Langley offers its second annual “Small Pleasures” show featuring a large group of Brackenwood’s finest artists. The exhibit opens Saturday, Nov. 5 with an artists’ reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and continues through Dec. 31.
Here is a sneak preview of some of the “Small Pleasures” under $500 you can expect to find at Brackenwood: landscapes and still life oil paintings by Pete Jordan, Faye and Truman Castle, Buffy Cribbs, Jennifer Phillips and Jason Waskey; one-of-a-kind bronze vases by Jim Patereau; watercolor paintings by Ginny O’Neill, Nola Allen and Bruce Morrow; hand-colored etchings by Briony Morrow-Cribbs; encaustics by Bergen Rose; photographs by Earl Olsen, Rich Frishman and Skip Smith; a leaning maple bookshelf by Gary Leake; Sara Saltee’s assemblage boxes and shrines; silky scarves and wraps for that special holiday event by Carys Ann Hamer and Cheryl Kamera; plus a great selection of jewelry by Rebecca Bashara, Judy Morgan, Eileen Sutton, Jody Wilke and Jennifer Phillips.
Although the show formally opens in November, the gallery will be adding more art on Dec. 3, with another reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

Island Framery in Clinton has art from Joy Dennis
“Birth of the New Earth: A New Show by Joy Dennis” will present a show of paintings at Island Framery in Clinton through Nov. 30.
Dennis says of her muse: “I have been inspired over the past few months to think of the rebirth of the Earth as that new phase approaches. I have also been exploring symbology as a way of expressing thoughts in a less direct manner. Combining these two concepts have lead me into a new frontier in art making. To think of the Earth as having a conception and birthing experience creates another intimate link between humankind and their home.”

Artworks Gallery featured artist is Barbara Marks
Watercolorist and acrylic painter Barbara Marks will be featured through November at Artworks Gallery at Greenbank Farm. Born in Minneapolis, and educated in the UK, Marks began her art career in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Her works have been influenced by the many places she has lived and visited. Geographical and cultural differences are reflected in her art. Marks aspires to create a sense of movement in her works that conveying an exuberance of joy.
Other artists at Artworks Gallery co-op include paintings in oil, watercolor, colored pencil and acrylic, handcrafted jewelry, color and black-and-white photography, fiber arts, metal sculpture, pottery, raku and vessel gourd art.

Hundred Bucks Art Show at Taste for Wine
Taste for Wine tasting room and art gallery in Bayview Corner’s Cash Store presents its “Hundred Bucks Show” for affordable art through December at its Cellar Room gallery. The show includes a variety of local art for $100 or less in stone, fiber, metal, prints and photography.
Enjoy an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. when visitors can see small stone carvings from Hank Nelson’s Cloudstone Sculpture, perfect for garden art or coffee table pieces; woven scarves and metal jewelry from Marcy Johnson; prints of Gaylen Whiteman’s watercolors, Betty Rayle’s etchings and monotypes, Carol Hurless’s oil paintings and Jacob Bloom’s steampunk art; photography by David Rogan-Levine; and small prints and cards from Buffy Cribbs and other local artists.
Taste for Wine will be participating in the Whidbey Island Vintners Association’s Fall Wine Tour on Whidbey Nov.11-13. The tasting room for two Island wineries — Blooms Winery on Whidbey and Spoiled Dog Winery — Taste for Wine will also have live music both Saturday and Sunday of the tour, with acoustic guitar by Quinn Fitzpatrick from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and the Latin Jazz sounds of Baby Bahiafrom 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The following Sunday, Nov. 20, Spoiled Dog Winery will announce the winner of the 2011 Spoiled Dog of the Year, and singer songwriter Eleanor Fye will perform live from 3 to 5 p.m.
