Trio bringing music of Brazil to Whidbey

A special concert is coming to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island.

A special and exciting concert is coming to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island on Saturday, May 11.

Choro das 3, a trio of three sisters from São Paulo, Brazil who are highly regarded as some of the best choro musicians in the world, will perform in Freeland at 7 p.m, according to a press release.

Choro is a musical style that originated in Brazil over 100 years ago and is now popular internationally. In Brazil, Choro das 3 has been featured on national television, played for the president and for huge audiences at national festivals. The band toured the U.S. annually from 2013 to 2019, playing concert venues, festivals and universities from coast to coast. They’ve also toured internationally and have released 11 CDs.

Of the three sisters in the band (family name Meyer Ferreira), Corina plays flute and piccolo, Lia plays acoustic seven string guitar and Elisa, who writes many of their tunes, plays mandolin, clarinet, banjo, piano and accordion. From the time of the band’s founding, their father, Eduardo, played percussion. Tragically, he died from COVID early in the pandemic.

Corina, Lia, Elisa, and their mother, Cristina, arrived in the U.S. in May 2023 with their two dogs, Lola and Bibi. They drove their motor home over 10,000 kilometers, giving concerts from Cape Cod to Rhode Island and will arrive in Washington State in May 2024.

All are welcome at this very special and exciting concert. Tickets are by good will donation at the door. The church is located at 20103 Highway 525 in Freeland.
