“Whidbey Island Center for the Arts is presenting its second annual community concert for the holidays on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 17 and 18, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15/adults, $8/seniors & ages 13 and under; at 221-8268. Both nights will feature selections of well-loved Christmas and holiday music, including works by Haydn, Mozart, Vivaldi and Handel. This year’s Festive Concert of Joyous Music will include performances by the Saratoga Chamber Players, conducted by Joseph Itaya, with special guests and collaborators including mezzo-soprano Ute Freund, pianist Kathy Fox, and jazz music by the Richard Rorex Trio. Also on stage will be the Choir of St. Stephens, under the direction of Lynn Verhorn; the Wellington Day School Choir, directed by Beth Itaya; and the Langley United Methodist Church Choir, under the direction of Bill Humphries. Saturday’s special line-up also includes the a cappella singing of the Shifty Sailors. As a special attraction, local actor and radio personality David Ossman will read from Dylan Thomas’s poetic work A Child’s Christmas in Wales.Last year’s concerts both sold out — even with the surprise snow storm, said WICA Executive Director, Elise Forier. This is a beautiful community event, as well as a gorgeous holiday concert.Retired Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist Michael Nutt has once again coordinated this year’s concert. Last year I swore I wasn’t going to do this again,” he said.” But then, you know, it must be done. We must sing. We must celebrate. Come and enjoy a festive and tuneful night of holiday cheer at WICA, which extends seasons greetings to all.”
