Performers win music scholarships
One young violinist got lucky on the final night of the Youth in Arts Week performances.
The performances at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts featured students of Island Strings who were vying for one of three Island Arts Council music scholarships.
This year, however, there were four applicants for the three $250 scholarships.
David Ossman and Judith Walcutt happened to be in the audience and spoke up when they realized the fourth applicant would not be able to receive a scholarship.
Through their generosity and the Devin E. Ossman Memorial Fund for Young Musicians, Marena Salerno Collins was given the fourth scholarship and also became the first recipient of the Ossman memorial fund.
The Island Arts Council scholarship winners are Gloria Ferry-Brennan, Michael Hunner and Melissa Smith.
All the scholarship recipients are students of the violin.
The American Association of University Women has announced the winners of its Showcase of the Arts at Greenbank Farm. Hundreds of art students from island high schools participated.
