“There is something wrong, wrong, wrong about the attempted closure of a long public right-of-way on the dike at Double Bluff and we are pleased that the Rod and Gun Club is going to investigate it, as well as find out where the county owned accesses are to beaches on South Whidbey. At a time when public access to Whidbey’s bounty is being swallowed a step at a time, every precaution ought to be taken to see that none of it is lost by default. The county ought to be getting more public access, not selling or vacating what it already has.”
Evans outlines reasons he should be governor
“A two-sided campaign which he hopes will carry him to the governor’s office was outlined for South Whidbey residents Wednesday night by Dan Evans, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor in the forthcoming elections.
“Evans, speaking to some 75 islanders at the Bayview Hall, said his campaign is based on showing what the present administration lacks and on a positive Republican program to provide better state government.”
Goss Lake gets plant of big trout
“Some 4,000 fat and sassy legal sized rainbow trout, planted in Goss Lake Tuesday, sweetens the prospects for an outstanding day Sunday on South Whidbey when the lowland lake fishing season opens.
“Besides the hungry group in Goss Lake, South Whidbey fishermen and their mainland brothers will have two other outstanding lakes to choose from Sunday. Lone Lake, after a year’s closure, has been called one of the ‘best bets for opening day’ by game department officials.”
Divers recover stolen property in Chase Lake
“Skin divers Virginia Long and Gene Golob, probing the muddy waters of Chase Lake north of Freeland Monday, recovered a stolen strongbox, thereby moving the sheriff’s officer closer to a solution to the robbery.
“The strongbox had been stolen from the home of Frank Sanders of Freeland on April 4. At the time, it contained property deeds and other important papers, an old coin collection, keepsake jewelry and some money.
“The day after the robbery, acting on a tip, the remains of papers from the strongbox were found where they had been burned near Chase Lake. This past Friday, a portion of the collection of old coins as found hidden in the area.”
