“Kevin Arndt’s two home runs were the bright spots in what coach Bill Patterson described as a fiasco of a baseball game Monday at Nooksack Valley.Arndt powered almost-identical home runs over the left-center field fence in the first and third innings, both coming on high fastballs. If you transposed the path of both balls it’d be exactly the same, said Patterson.Unfortunately, the Falcon defense, usually dependable, faltered behind the solid pitching of Brian Gabelein. He got grounders and flies, Patterson said. The trouble was, 10 of those grounders and flies were muffed, giving Nooksack 9 runs on only 3 hits. South Whidbey managed 6 runs on 5 hits.The outcome was better Friday against Blaine with the Falcons winning 10-7 in a game that featured another Arndt home run, this one a three-run bomb in the third. It put us ahead for good, said Patterson.Tristan Johnson went the distance on the mound. Blaine had the potential tying run come to the plate in the seventh when an outstanding play by Falcon third baseman Brady Switzer ended the threat and the game. With two outs and two on, the batter scorched a line drive down the third base line. Switzer dived for the ball, got up from his knees and fired a one-hop strike to first baseman Gabelein for the final out. It was basic Brooks Robinson, said Patterson. A sparkling play.After Monday’s game the Falcons stood in fourth place in the North Cascades League with a 4-5 record. The top six teams advance to the playoffs. The Falcons play at home tonight against Nooksack and Friday against Meridian.”
