“South Whidbey’s conference baseball season ends this week, but the team is hoping to advance to the playoffs.The Falcons were bruised twice by highly ranked Meridian in their last two games. They lost 9-3 at Meridian on Monday and 7-3 at home to the same team on Friday, and as a result their North Cascades record dropped to 6-8.This week the Falcons travel to Lynden Christian tonight, then end the regular season Friday by hosting the Lyncs. The three seniors on the team will be honored in their final home appearance.Next week the Falcons play at Burlington in a non-conference game Wednesday to end the regular season.Six of the nine teams in the North Cascades Conference advance to the playoffs. Through Monday, the Falcons were fifth at 6-8, followed by Blaine, Mount Baker and Sultan, all at 6-9. Coach Bill Patterson figured South Whidbey’s chances of making the playoffs were solid, but his team’s fate won’t be known until the final games are played out. At least one win against the 9-3 Lyncs would help assure a playoff spot.Monday at Meridian, Patterson put Nick Lamb on the mound as a starter for the first time this season — an unenviable position going up against the state’s number two ranked AA team.He did a pretty good job after a shaky start, said Patterson. Lamb was matched against an outstanding pitcher in the Lyncs’ Kyle Dennum. I was really impressed, Patterson said. His yellow hammer carve buckles your knees.Still, the Falcons managed to get some hits by going after fastballs early in the count. Lame was 2-for-4 with 2 singles, and Kevin Arndt singled and doubled.Friday’s game was closer until the fifth when Lynden Christian broke it open with five unearned runs thanks to two Falcon errors and a scattering of singles. Without the unearned runs we win 3-2, said Patterson. Tristan Johnson started on the mound and went four strong innings for the Falcons.The hitting highlight for the Falcons was a two-run homer by Arndt in the second. It was his seventh dinger of the year which sets a new South Whidbey home run record. Lamb enjoyed a great day in left field where he was credited with six putouts.”
