Big issues face school board at Tuesday meeting

“With a superintendent search to kick off and a do-or-die levy election to consider, next Tuesday’s school board meeting should be interesting. It’s the first regular board meeting since the levy proposal went down to defeat in the Feb. 29 election. It was South Whidbey’s first levy failure in nearly two decades. In a special meeting soon after the defeat, the board voted to resubmit the same levy to voters on April 25. Another failure would result in laying off teachers and other staff and making other budget cuts, according to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lisa Bjork. She’s been going over RIF (reduction in force) procedures with the district’s three union bargaining groups in case the levy fails again.Bjork will be leaving the district at the end of June. The school board held a special meeting last week to review firms that specialize in searching for superintendents. The decision was made to hire Dr. Richard E. Smith from the consulting firm of Assistance in Management to lead the search. Smith will be introduced at next Tuesday’s board meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Intermediate School Community Room.”
