“A recently announced recall of possibly contaminated cheddar cheese may have caught the ear of Whidbey Islanders. That’s because the label on the product reads Greenbank Farms Organic Medium Cheddar Cheese. But the product has nothing to do with Central Whidbey’s publicly-owned Greenbank Farm, which sells a variety of local food products through its gift shop. The cheese in question is made by Stonefelt and Company which operates Greenbank Farms and the Greenbank Cheese store in the eastern King County town of Preston. The company said Wednesday that it was recalling 1,260 pounds of its cheese after a routine Department of Agriculture test turned up possible listeria contamination. The recalled cheese was sold through QFC stores in Washington and Oregon. Whidbey’s Greenbank Farm does not make any cheese of its own and only sells small packets of Tillamook-brand cheese in the gift shop. Young children and the elderly are seriously at risk of infection if they ingest the listeria bacteria. No confirmed illnesses were reported. Recalled cheese should be returned to the point of purchase.”
