Churches announce topics of Sunday services

Local churches have announced the topic's for services this Sunday.

Songwriter to give the Unity message

Doug Benecke will speak on “Light Hidden in the Darkness” on Sunday at Unity of Whidbey.

As our planet continues on its circuit through silent, starlit space and our hemisphere cycles into the dark of winter, our woods are beset by mist and rain, much as our lives travel through shadowy or mist-obscured moments. Within the darkness, unknown to us, seeds are taking root, new life is forming, the exact shapes of which are imperceptible.

Our walk through this world is truly one of faith, as we step into what can not be known. And so it is that, with each perceived ending, there is a new beginning.

On Sunday, join Benecke, a speaker and songwriter, and talented violinist Talia Toni Marcus for an exploration of these intriguing themes as Unity of Whidbey prepares to enter its new church home, and bids farewell to its old stopping place, Bayview Community Hall.

The service begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Bayview Community Hall. All are welcome.

A “Bye-Bye Bayview” potluck will be held following the service.

Pastor Wedeking to speak at SWCC

Pastor Ron Wedeking will speak at South Whidbey Community Church on Sunday at the 10 a.m. worship.

The church’s adult-learning forum continues at its regular time of 9 a.m., with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of Acts and Art Angst leading a study into the Gospel of Luke. These are open classes where everyone is invited.

SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that adheres to the National Association of Evangelical’s Statement of Faith. It is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley. For further information about the church and services, go to www.whidbeychurch.org or call 221-1220.

UUCWI looks at the wisdom of the ancients

All of the world’s most influential religions have heroic figures who model life as it should be lived. Jesus is the hero of Christianity, as Moses would be for Judaism and Mohammed for Islam. The Buddha and Confucius modeled life for their followers as did the many gods of Hinduism and other polytheistic religions.

The wisdom of these ancient heroes shapes our global culture today. At the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island service on Sunday, Rev. Kit Ketcham will consider the value their precepts offer us during this holiday season.

Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

‘A Midnight Clear’ at Langley CMA Church

As the Christmas season approaches, come join the Langley CMA Church choir and drama teams as they present the musical drama “A Midnight Clear.” Experience the events that led to the birth of the Messiah, angels singing, shepherds in the fields and wise men following a star. A familiar story, an ordinary night, but extraordinary events that change our lives forever.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Friday night for Christmas desserts.

Childcare will be provided for children 3 and younger. The church is located at Sixth Street and Cascade Avenue, Langley. For more information, call 341-1478.

Try using Jesus’ teachings every day

On Sunday, Dec. 6, the Christian Science service discusses how you can follow Jesus’ teachings in daily practice because you are the child of God, “the only cause and creator.”

“Come and see the works of God…” (Psalms 66:5). Keeping in mind that God created everything, and it was good, Jesus said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.” (John 14: 12)

Everyone is welcome. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525 (north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road).

UUCWI has evening service on Wednesday

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island will gather at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9 for “EvenSong: The Essence of Christmas.”

Come share in prayer, meditation and song; focus on what is most meaningful to you about this sacred season. A harp prelude will be at 7:15 p.m.

The service is at the church at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland.
