Churches on South Whidbey will cover myriad of topics this Sunday

South Whidbey churches announced the topics for services this weekend, and they run the gamut.

Unity focuses on the journey of forgiveness

Chris Nelson will give the talk “Forgiveness, the Journey to the Fountain of Joy” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday.

Nelson will lead an exploration of the benefits of forgiveness; knowing that to forgive another’s mistakes and errors, one can breathe more easily because one is also forgiven of an imperfect past. It is not an easy path, but it is part of the soul’s journey and is richly rewarded in the creation of heaven on earth.

Tadd CharetteNunn will provide the musical inspiration and Sam Glass with be the platform assistant.

All are welcome. The service is 10 a.m. Sunday at Unity’s church at 5671 Crawford Road.

Visit Unity of Whidbey’s website at www.unityofwhidbeyisland.org for more information.

Pastor Wenzek will speak on ‘God Almighty’

Tomorrow morning Pastor Darrell Wenzek will preach on “God Almighty” at South Whidbey Community Church.

There will also be a monthly men’s breakfast at the Deer Lagoon Grange at 8:30 a.m. today. Following breakfast, some of the guys will regroup at the church property and cut firewood for anyone in need of fuel this winter. Come and join the men for a great breakfast; playing Paul Bunyan afterwards is extra.

Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 with Stan Walker leading a study in the Book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the lives of the Patriarchs. These are open classes and everyone is invited.

SWCC gathers for worship at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road. For further information about the church and services, call 221-1220.

Association Sunday at UUCWI in Freeland

Peter Luton, senior minister at Bellevue’s Eastshore Unitarian Church, will be the guest speaker at a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island service on Sunday.

Rev. Luton will honor the past and consider how the Unitarian Universalist Association might grow in the future.

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

The service is at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation meets at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland.

Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

Lessening the fears of sin, disease and death

“Are sin, disease and death real?” This question provides the subject matter of the Sunday, Oct. 9 services at the Christian Science Church.

“The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good,” (“Science and Health”).

If disharmony, lack or sickness have seemed to overwhelm your sense of the goodness in life, embark on a journey of discovery into how and why you can change your experience through a connection to spirit rather than making an idol out of fear.

Everyone is welcome. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525, just north of Bayview.

Stevens brings songs of praise to St. Hubert’s

Tammie Stevens returns to St. Hubert Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 as guest speaker and song leader with her spontaneous enthusiasm for praising God that helps everyone lift their voices in praise.

The evening begins with songs of praise, followed by teaching how to grow in praise through personal prayer throughout the day.

The program is sponsored by the St. Hubert Prayer Group. For more information, call Bell Moore at 730-1689.

UMC celebrates special anniversary on Sunday

Langley United Methodist Church will celebrate the third anniversary of becoming a Reconciling Congregation on Sunday, Oct. 9.

In October 2008, the church council passed a resolution to invite and welcome all persons without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity into full participation in its congregational life. Guest preacher will be the Rev. Dave Bieniek.

Rev. Bieniek began to pursue seminary studies in the denomination of his youth, but ultimately realized that his church would not allow him to serve as a partnered gay man. Ultimately he realized his dream of ministry when he was ordained by the Metropolitan Community Church in 2005.

The Reconciling Sunday service will begin at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to this service, especially members of the South Whidbey LGBT community.

Unitarian Universalists will celebrate EvenSong

On the second Wednesday of each month, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island holds a quiet, contemplative candlelight evening gathering of song, meditation and readings.

This month’s theme is “Grace.” Accompanied by flute and harp music, this is a time of peaceful reflection. All are welcome; the prelude begins at 7:25 p.m. Oct. 12 at 20103 Highway 525.
