City of Langley to help pay for fashion event

Langley officials have agreed to divert $4,395 in the budget that was devoted to the emerging Main Street program to the Langley Chamber of Commerce so it can be spent on a weekend fashion event later this month.

Chamber officials had asked for the funding so it could be spent to promote Fun & Fashion Langley Style, a two-day event on May 21-22 that organizers said will include three fashion shows, wine and beer tastings, spa specials, late-night entertainment, fitness classes, spa specials, garden tours and a “fashion flash.”

Mayor Paul Samuelson said the Main Street effort had not yet gained its nonprofit status, but the fashion event would fit with Main Street’s goals of bringing visitors to the Village by the Sea.

“This came along and it seems to fit what we need to be doing here,” Samuelson said.

Chamber director Sherry Jennings said Fun & Fashion Langley Style was shaping up to be “a really outrageous event” that was designed to pull in visitors who would “shop till you drop.”

Downtown merchants have been involved in planning the event, and stores are expected to stay open late during the weekend.

Councilwoman Rene Neff said planning for the event has been ongoing for the past three months, and added that while Langley has plenty of events, very few benefit the merchants on First and Second streets.

“It’s probably the first event that really showcases many of our businesses,” Neff said.
