The South Whidbey Community Clinic will be closed for two weeks so old carpet and asbestos-containing tiles can be replaced with new flooring. The clinic will close at noon Friday, Sept. 21 and reopen at noon Monday, Oct. 8.

Hank Hanigan, chief operating officer, announced at the Whidbey General Hospital board meeting Monday that it will cost $35,000 to replace the worn carpet at the Clinton clinic which provides primary care to families of low and moderate income.

Hanigan said the carpet was glued to tiles that contain asbestos, so experts in asbestos removal will have to do the work. A compressed time frame, he said, will have as little impact as possible on patients, but it increased the cost.

Hanigan said a Labor and Industries inspector made a “very pointed” remark about the necessity of replacing it in a recent report.
