Clinton man charged after woman beaten

Langley assault occurred last fall

A 33-year-old Clinton man is facing a felony assault charge after a woman was beaten in Langley last fall.

Andrew Damerau was charged Feb. 4 in Island County Superior Court with third-degree assault, a domestic violence charge. The charge is defined as causing “bodily harm accompanied by substantial pain that extended for a period sufficient to cause suffering.”

According to an Island County sheriff’s report, a deputy responded to a report of an assault at a Langley residence Sept. 15. A 34-year-old woman at the home said Damerau threw her to the ground several times, punched her in the arms and kicked her in the shin, the report states.

The deputy wrote that the woman had a cut on her shin, a cut on the back of her head and black and blue marks all over her body.

A doctor later told the deputy that the woman had to have a series of treatments for more than a month because of the injuries, the report states.

The deputy wrote that Damerau admitted there was a physical confrontation between him and the woman, but he refused to talk about what happened.

If convicted of the charge, Damerau would face a standard sentencing range of one to three months in jail.
