Clinton martial arts students excel at regional tournament in Oregon

Several students from Armstrong’s Taekwondo received recognition for their outstanding performance in the American Taekwondo Association Oregon Regional Tournament in Oregon City, Ore., this past weekend.

Several students from Armstrong’s Taekwondo received recognition for their outstanding performance in the American Taekwondo Association Oregon Regional Tournament in Oregon City, Ore., this past weekend.

Armstrong’s Taekwondo had 16 members compete at the April 18 tournament, according to a news release. Competitors faced off against members from other schools in the Northwest District which includes Canada, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Washington and Oregon.

Instructor and owner Robert Armstrong wrote in an email that he is proud of every student who competed.

“It takes a lot of courage to go onto the mats and compete against people you do not know and judges you have never seen before,” he wrote. “All of them have accomplished many victories.”

Some of the students will move on to compete for titles at District Championships on May 30 in Seattle.

World Championships will be held in July in Little Rock, Ark.

Competitors can compete in forms, weapons, sparring and combat sparring categories.

Students from Armstrong’s Taekwondo placed as follows: Michaela Terrell, second in weapons; Trevor Hardaway, second in sparring; Kai Gallagher, second in forms; Nicholas Armstrong, first in forms, third in sparring and first in combat sparring; Joshua Chia, second in sparring; Caleb Sonntag, third in forms and third in sparring; Dane Saxton, third in forms and second in combat sparring; Brandon Thrasher, third in forms and second in sparring; Amber Terrell, first in forms; and Tara Armstrong, third in weapons and first in combat sparring.

Braxtyn Litwiller-Fleming, Weston Dill, Grady Armstrong, Cassandra Terrell and Josephine Chia earned the Songham Spirit Award.
