Greg Banks has announced that he will seek a second term as Island County prosecuting attorney.

Banks, who was elected in 1998, is expected to file next week for re-election to the office.

“I think we’ve streamlined administrative procedures in the prosecutor’s office since I was elected,” Banks said.

Coming in new made it possible for him to change procedural things instead of “sticking with the old ways.”

“The public is getting more bang for its buck,” he said.

Banks said his office has also improved its record on criminal prosecutions.

“We’ve increased the percentage of cases from 66 to 70 percent taken to trial or solution,” he said.

Banks moved to Washington state from Connecticut in 1985 and went to work for Boeing as an engineer. After building airplanes for three years, he worked at a software company that developed fingerprint identification programs used by the FBI.

He graduated from the University of Washington School of Law in 1993 and became a deputy prosecutor for Island County. After leaving that position he opened a private practice in Freeland in 1995 before becoming county prosecutor in 1998.

He lives with his wife, Kathy, and three children in Freeland.
