UPDATE: Police have now said the reported luring incident was simply a misunderstanding.

South Whidbey School District officials are warning parents after a couple reportedly tried to lure a fourth-grade student into their car Wednesday morning while she was on her way to school.

The girl was waiting at a school bus stop in downtown Langley. District officials said the couple told the girl, a student at South Whidbey Elementary School, that buses weren’t running today. The girl refused to get into the vehicle and went to a nearby business to report the incident, and police were called.

The school district is sending a warning letter home with students today. Officials said they will also be sending out an alert to all parents on the district’s emergency communication system.

“This girl did exactly what she has been taught to do,” the letter states, and it also asks anyone with information on the incident to call Langley police.

The couple was described as an older man and woman with “darker skin with an accent in a tan or gold hatchback car.”
