Langley Police Chief Bob Herzberg said the report of an attempting luring that occurred at 8:30 a.m. today involving a 10-year-old girl was only a misunderstanding.

Police across the South End searched for two people in a gold-colored hatchback after a fourth-grader said she was approached by two strangers while waiting for a school bus in downtown Langley. The woman driver said the buses weren’t running and offered the girl a ride to school.

Herzberg said he was contacted by a Langley woman, the grandmother of a student at a private school in Clinton, who said she was the driver of the car that had stopped earlier.

The woman told Herzberg that she thought the girl had missed the bus and that it was all a mistake. The woman also told Herzberg that she has a granddaughter who goes to school earlier in the day which led her to think the girl who was waiting at the bus stop had missed her bus.

“She saw this girl standing downtown at 8:30 – and it’s pretty doggone deserted – and she was concerned just about that, by itself, and then she thought, ‘She must have missed the bus.’ She was really trying to get her to school,” Hezberg said.

“She is a very loving, caring person who was trying to be helpful. And she now knows the next time she needs to be helpful, she can call one of us to make the contact,” he said.

The police ran a check based on the description of the car and determined the woman’s story was authentic.

“Everyone worked great together. Tips came in, and we got a happy ending, and no one was really hurt,” he said.
