Early morning ferry misses Clinton-to-Mukilteo run on Friday

Some early morning commuters weren’t able to take their regular ferry trip Friday due to the scrubbing of the 5:05 a.m. run from Clinton and 5:35 run from Mukilteo.

The Washington State Ferries boat Kitsap was down a crew member this morning, which meant the ferry wasn’t able to make a round trip due to U.S. Coast Guard staffing requirements. Washington State Ferries Communications Representative John Vezina said having a short crew meant the 5:35 ferry departing Mukilteo also missed its run.

“The ferry missed a round trip until another crew came and they were able to go on the next run,” Vezina said. “We don’t know what happened to the crew member.”

Vezina said the Coast Guard changed the number of people required to sail a few years ago. He added it took away any leeway with staffing the ferries.

The 5:30 a.m. ferry departing Clinton left on schedule.
