“One of Virginia Harvey’s woven sculpture pieces, for which she has been recognized internationally.Bayview Gallery is presenting the exhibition, Virginia Harvey and Friends, a collection of textile creations by one of the leading textile artists in the Pacific Northwest, Jan. 20-Feb. 5. Harvey, a South Whidbey resident, was the original curator of the Textile Collection at the University of Washington, now at the Henry Gallery, where she has worked for more than 30 years. She has created in this medium for 80 years and started a textile revolution in the 1960s with her book Macrame-The Art of Creative Knotting, still considered the bible on the subject. Harvey has also published numerous other books on macrame and basketry.Her current work includes patterned weavings of natural yarns incorporating black bamboo, miniature tapestries and colorful silk thread wraps in geometric patterns. Harvey is joined by some of her students and other area textile artists in this salute to her years of dedication to the world of fabric arts. A documentary film about Virginia is being produced, part of which will be shot at the opening artists’ reception on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. The show runs through Feb. 4.Bayview Gallery is located at 5603 S.
